It’s probably true that the worst moments of our lives are determined by grey, lonely moments when we feel sad, disenfranchised and alone.
Islington is one of the loneliest boroughs, according to the London Data store, and those aged 65 and over are the most likely to become lonely.
Three-quarters of older people in the UK feel lonely: being widowed or divorced increases the probability.
What’s even worse is the lack of conversation about the issue in the community, as more than 75 percent of people in the UK prefer not to talk about how alone they feel, according to the Jo Cox Commission for Loneliness.
“Suddenly you are lonely, without a family, friends or any relatives,” said Lyn Ambrose, 47, Pets Against Loneliness’ founder.
Ambrose is fighting this, with a little help from “man’s best friend” – well-behaved dogs who meet with their owners over a cup of tea in a vibrant and stimulating environment.
“I founded this community project because older generations need it. The animal company can be an icebreaker for them, and allow them the owners to have a conversation,” she said.
It’s estimated that about 71% of elderly people’s relatives feel surprised that their loved ones feel lonely.
Ambrose’s community-led association was launched in March 2018. Morning sessions take place usually between 10am and 12 at the New Unity Newington Green Meeting House, N16 9PR on the first Saturday of each month.
“We provide free cakes and volunteers ready to help. Everyone is welcome,” Ambrose said.
The next meeting will be held May 5th, with the usual passion and dedication – as well as tea and cakes, and maybe a dog biscuit or two.
Pets Against Loneliness created crowdfunding to provide project delivery, such as resources and refreshments for participants, catering equipment, promotional materials, and project development activities.
